A New Beginning of Sorts - part 4
“There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.” —Louis L’Amour
New beginnings can be exciting and they can also be daunting and scary…. Full of fear, and wonder.
Brian knew in his heart the time had come for another new beginning, and, we together, decided to let our beautiful herd of Jersey cattle find a new home. Though this decision came with such strong emotions, and yes a massive amount of anxiety and paperwork, the time had come and the direction of our farm was longing for a change. And so were we!
Our cows found a lovely home in Pennsylvania. The farmers who are now loving them, ever as much as we did, are now sharing the gift of our gentle Jerseys with their own “littles” beginning in much the same way we did all those years ago with our own herd… it’s quite a beautiful ending for that part of our lives and a beautiful new beginning for theirs, and for us as well…
Make it stand out
Our Beautiful girls will always hold a special place in our hearts!
In many ways, it is “beginning again”, but also continuing on as we have for the past many years. We are both so grateful for this changed opportunity, on the farm where we began all those years ago, together, with the same passionate commitment to local agriculture—and, more importantly, to you, who share our love and vision for keeping it vibrant and thriving.
These years of farming have been so significant for both Brian and me, not only to honor his family’s agricultural heritage right here in Barnet, where it all began centuries ago, but truly, because is at the heart and driving force of all we work towards on the farm. We are a team, as it has been from our start, serving each other with our respective strengths and coming alongside each other to sure up and strengthen each other’s weaknesses, together, and serving our community and all those who visit and support our farm stand. The last 5 years have certainly proven our strength and stamina as a team, and although there are tough days and the journey with my health uncertain, we know that our farm is where our hearts are.
There is such a deep satisfaction in our hearts, as we witness so many embracing our shared commitment to local agriculture. Truly, it is a driving force behind all we do.
Providing beautiful flowers in the spring, our vegetable garden starts, for your home garden adventures, freshly harvested vegetables, full of taste and nutrition, to our grass-fed beef is not just a job, but rather, as Brian and I often remind ourselves, the past generations of Somers’ who began so many years ago right here in Barnet, would be honored by our hard work and deep commitment to their much-loved way of life for so many generations.
We have often talked of the many hardships they endured, especially through the Depression era. They truly knew the value of hard work and doing whatever it took to keep food on the table. Their stories of endurance are so inspiring to us and when the work here on the farm is tough and our bodies are tired, we gain strength from them to push forward.
We can’t wait to share with you all that is yet to come! Each growing season brings with it such anticipation. It is the renewing of another life cycle, the hope of a bountiful harvest, the warmth of the sun-kissed and rain-washed soil, and the joy of working together side by side doing what we love!
It is… just that simple… a new beginning, yet the same story.
Happy Farmers! Excited for what is to come!
