Looking towards Spring !
“The only way around is through.” – Robert Frost.
There is much truth to Robert Frost’s quote…. Brian and I have both discovered in this season of fighting for the life of one with Cancer that truly the only way around is through, and for us, we are greatly looking towards Spring…
Though we will still be thick into the “going through” to get around to the other side, so to speak…. Life simply must go on, because if we stop all with the plans to live when the storm is past, we are simply missing out on a lot of living….
The Flower selections for the 2026 Spring lineup have been made. We are not going to grow all we had planned, but are choosing for this season of life to grow what is most needed and important to you. (We have put a lot of thought into this) just so that our work is more manageable, as we are quite preoccupied. Our supplies, consisting of soil, pots, trays, inserts, etc., are here and waiting for Early March.
Honestly, it is a daunting feeling this year. An act on my part (Kathy) that requires full-fledged faith that all will come together and work out. I love gardening and growing just this much to try to fit it in, along with cancer treatments and healing a very broken body. It is…. for sure… a great motivation to get well and something to look forward to.
I thought it would be maybe fun to share in brief what all goes on behind the scenes to make it all happen….
Growing for us starts in Early March… like the very first week! Those beautiful pansies and longer growing flowers need all that time to be ready and waiting for you near Mother’s Day! March through mid-April are the major weeks for transplanting into pots, packs, hanging baskets, and deck pots. It is really non-stop. We receive weekly shipments of tiny plant plugs and liners you may have ever seen… they are fragile, and always nerve-racking to think of them being on a truck during cold weather.
Inventory is the first thing that happens! Next is inspection and count… The days leading up to each shipment have Brian very busy prefilling pots, inserts, hanging baskets, deck pots so that we can just get busy planting, labeling, watering,— and feeding. And…. oh, if it were just that simple.
In between all of this are all the transplants we are starting for the Vegetable gardens, and greenhouse crops…. Honestly! There is never a dull moment.
I am again, just reading this, left with the question of “HOW?”
I don’t know what your beliefs are, and I don’t want to presume they are the same as ours, but our Farm, from the first day we arrived here until the last day we are here, has been fully placed into the hands of a God who is much greater, stronger, and wiser than we are. He is the glue that has made it work, even during very impossible times. We have had our share of “Impossible,” and if you know any of my story, you realize a bit of that.
In 2019, at the brink of our busy season, I almost lost my life, yet, Community members, Family, and Friends simply showed up… There was no way we would have made it through had that not happened…. I know that was how our Good God provided for us… as if to say… “I have you… even in the hard,” and this farm is not finished yet!
We are looking forward to what God is going to do…. If He says this is it, then that is okay…. If He says… I will provide a way for this year to run smoothly, we will be thankful…. either way, it is okay…
But…. the only way around is through… and that is what we are going to do….
A bit of a hint for you… We are taking a small jump into the world of “Proven Winners,” especially in the Petunia World! I can’t wait for you to see the baskets this year…. We will have a focus on Patriotic, as this is our Country’s 250th Anniversary! Yes! There will be other most loved colors and combos as well.
Can’t wait to share it all with you!
Farming with you in mind! Farming is in our blood, and we can’t imagine doing anything different!
Kathy
